About Ray

Still life photography requires a special eye, someone who can breathe life into the inanimate.

Ray Lavoie is a Columbus, Ohio-based still-life photographer who translates the energy within an object into high-quality imagery for consumers, businesses, and investors..

"I see in high-energy and bright colors," Ray said. "There are not a lot of muted colors in my world. The way I shoot – the lens I choose, the angle, which object, which way – reflects that."

His photos – whether a simple shot of a designer pump or a dramatic angle of a skyscraper – always evoke a response.

"I do my best work when I’m uncomfortable. When someone says, ‘Dip this shoe in chocolate’ or ‘Float these sandals in shimmering water,’ I know I’m not going to leave the studio until it’s perfect."

Ray shot his first few rolls of film at age 8 on a family vacation in the Poconos. Armed with a Hawkeye camera and a cube flash, he stayed outside for hours shooting the waterfalls and rocks near the A-frame cabin.

Later, after studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Ray worked with some of the best photographers in the fashion industry. A short list of his studio mentors includes Mario Testino, Gilles Bensimon, Davies and Starr, David Sawyer and Spencer Jones.

After 10 years in New York, Ray looked for a new challenge, this time in the digital space. He accepted a position as photo editor for TV Guide’s online partner iGuide.

"This is where I got my PhD in business," he said. "I see a need or an opportunity, then I figure out how to solve it creatively."

After a decade of editing photos, Ray stepped behind the camera again in 2007 by opening his own studio. He and his team work tirelessly to create photographs their clients love.

"Because I worked as a creative for a large company, I understand my clients’ needs and goals – and pressures. It makes communication easy from the outset," he said.

When Ray is not working, he volunteers his time with the Columbus Society of Communication Arts, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Columbus Metropolitan Tennis Association.
